From 1972 to 1983, legendary manga artist Tezuka Osamu wrote his own take on the life of Siddhartha Gautama (who later becomes Buddha) with the Buddha manga series. Now, anime director-producer Morishita Kozo (Saint Seiya, Dragonball Z) adapts the entire series into an epic theatrical anime trilogy. The Great Departure is the first installment, and it reorganizes the manga’s narrative to tell two stories – the life of Siddhartha as a young prince, and the journey of Chapra, a slave of lower caste who becomes a soldier.

In addition to Sakai Masato (Golden Slumber) as Chapra, the visually splendid adventure also feature the voice talents of Yoshioka Hidetaka (Always), Mizuki Nana, and Yoshinaga Sayuri. With the support of major Japanese film production companies and the Japan Art Council, The Great Departure is the beginning of a true Japanese motion picture event.
