Famous for his villainous roles in some early Stephen Chow movies, Hong Kong actor Ching Tung makes his directorial debut with Choy Lee Fut Kung Fu, an entertaining tale about the influential school of martial arts originated in southern China. He has lined up a formidable cast for the film, including Hong Kong actors Michelle Ye, Kara Hui, Norman Tsui, and Stephen Chow’s frequent co-stars Ng Man Tat, Wong Yat Fei, Wong Yat San, and Kingdom Yuen. But the action comedy is indeed built as a starring vehicle for popular Mainland actor Wang Baoqiang (Mr. Tree), who is well on his way to A-list status following his eye-catching appearances in films like Fire of Conscience and Romancing in Thin Air.

Having learned real Shaolin kung fu as a kid, Wang seems the perfect choice for the protagonist Danny Chen, an innocent young man who goes back to China from the US to succeed to his father’s (Ng Man Tat) Choy Lee Fut martial school. At the airport, Danny mistakes the gorgeous Jing (Michelle Ye) for the thief that stole his cell phone and luggage, and in the resulting scuffle he is no match for Jing’s friend Canglong (former child actor Xie Miao). Back home, the Chen family’s butler (Wong Yat Fei) has been secretly plotting to take over their martial school, and Danny’s return becomes his biggest obstacle. With the martial school at stake, it is up to Danny to master the Choy Lee Fut kung fu and defend its reputation in the boxing championship!.
