Released over three volumes, Inoue Yasushi’s novel Wagahaha no Ki recounts the final years in the rocky relationship between an author and his elderly mother. Acclaimed filmmaker Harada Masato (Bounce Ko Gals, Climber’s High) brings the emotional tale to the big screen with Chronicle of My Mother. Yakusho Koji (13 Assassins) and Kiki Kirin (Villain) arguably two of Japan’s greatest living actors co-star as the author and his mother. Despite the potential for plenty of tear-inducing moments, Harada takes a gentle, but unsentimental approach to the material, unflinchingly dealing with issues like parental abandonment, familial responsibilities and losing a loved one to dementia.
Kosaku was sent off to live elsewhere at a young age due to his parents’ financial difficulties, and his relationship with them has been rocky ever since. As an adult, Kosaku (Yakusho Koji) is a successful author and the father of four children. However, he is also emotionally cold to those around him, including his own family members. When his widowed mother (Kirin Kiki) begins to show symptoms of dementia, Kosaku decides to take her in, despite still holding resentment for his abandonment. In her final years, Kosaku begins to melt his icy exterior and slowly come to truly care for his mother..
