Just about a shoo-in for Hong Kong’s most unexpected film of 2008, City Without Baseball stars the real-life members of the Hong Kong Baseball Team in a daring, baring drama about baseball dreams, urban soul searching, and tangled relationships. Baseball is a nary-followed sport in Hong Kong and many locals don’t know that the city actually has an official baseball team. In fact, when promotion posters for City Without Baseball showed up in Hong Kong, many people initially thought the film was Japanese. But City Without Baseball is most definitely a Hong Kong film, albeit one that completely defies expectations with its baseball player cast, sexual themes, postmodern musings, and full-frontal nudity scenes.

The members of the Hong Kong Baseball Team, who signed on to City Without Baseball in hopes of generating interest in the sport and the team, deliver brave, eyebrow-raising performances. Blurring the line between fact and fiction, the players use their real names in the film, and many of their baseball stories and experiences, as well as real game footage, are integrated into the film’s fictional narrative. Though director Lawrence Lau (My Name is Fame) shares billing, City Without Baseball is mainly a labor of love from first-time director Scud who also wrote and produced the film.

Beginning with the fresh arrival of Taiwan coach John Tai, City Without Baseball follows the underdog team’s growth amid player tensions, locker room drama, and myriad personal issues. Charismatic team star Chung (Leung Yu) has a serendipitous encounter with a mysterious, suicidal girl (Monie Tung, Whispers and Moans), while insecure rookie pitcher Ron (Ron Heung) struggles with a whole laundry list of relationship and identity problems including spats with teammates, an unfaithful girlfriend (Gia Lin, The Pye-Dog), and ambiguous feelings for Chung.
