Opposites attract in TVB’s lighthearted 1999 costume drama Colourful Life starring Frankie Lam and Annie Man. Aired during the Lunar New Year period, this humorous crowd-pleaser follows the comings, goings, and feuding of a wealthy merchant family in Tang Dynasty China. Petite actress Annie Man breaks through with her first TVB leading role after recently jumping from ATV, while Frankie Lam’s likeable turn as the good husband with a sassy wife paved the way for his later role in Virtues of Harmony. Perhaps the most pleasant surprise of the drama though is the addition of Ronald Cheng to the cast in his first comedic acting role. His hilarious performance was a big hit with the audience, helping to revitalize his career and send him on the path toward silver-screen funnyman. Colourful Life also co-stars Gigi Wong Suk Yee as the matron, TVB staples Louis Yuen, Cutie Miu, Louisa So, and Florence Kwok, as well as Myolie Wu in one of her first dramas.

Scholarly merchant Hin (Frankie Lam) is the fourth son in the Ching family, which has been in the business of textiles for generation. He holds a torch for Mung Si (May Kwong), but is unexpectedly betrothed a wife – kindhearted, but willful princess Wing Chu (Annie Man) who likes to practice martial arts, pick fights, and defend the weak. Just about polar opposites, Hin and Wing Chu bicker constantly, both hoping to get out of the engagement. However, when the Ching family hits on hard times because Hin’s brother Yung (Ronald Cheng) crosses the wrong people, it is Wing Chu that steps in to support Hin..
