Tsui Hark’s 2010 blockbuster movie Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame has raised public interest in the eponymous historical figure. Similarly centered on the revered official during the reign of Empress Wu, Shen Duan Di Ren Jie is the fourth series of a popular TV franchise that began in 2004 with The Detective Di Ren Jie, which spawned follow-up series in 2006 and 2008. In 2010, writer-director Qian Yanqiu and the original cast led by Liang Guanhua teamed up once more. Carrying a hefty price tag of RMB30 million, the fourth series shifts the main setting to Dunhuang and other exotic locales in the Gobi Desert. A big chunk of the budget was spent on the visual effects and action scenes, but perhaps the most fascinating aspect is that the wise Di Ren Jie will develop an ambiguous romantic affair with his new partner-in-crime-solving, while taking on more intricate cases and exciting adventures!.
