It’s St. Elsewhere, Hong Kong style. Medical dramas may never have been as popular as ghost comedies or triad shoot-em-ups with audiences at home or abroad, but Doctor’s Heart (1990) comes loaded with appeal for the Hong Kong film enthusiast. The tale of a run-down, corrupt hospital and an idealistic intern (Mark Cheng, Peking Opera Blues) fighting to literally and figuratively clean things up, the movie was co-written by Joe Ma (Feel 100%, Love Undercover) and features one of Michelle Reis’s (Fong Sai Yuk, Fallen Angels) first big-screen roles. Also on hand are Simon Yam (PTU, Election) as the villainous head surgeon, stalwart character actor Bill Tung (the Police Story series) and eye-candy favorite Amy Yip (Erotic Ghost Story).

Wong, a young medical intern, has big hopes and dreams, but he gets a harsh dose of reality when confronted with the poor working conditions and even poorer ethics of the hospital where he is assigned to complete his residency. The corrupt doctor who heads up the place doesn’t take well to Wong’s idealistic efforts to turn things around, much less his interest in the doc’s social worker girlfriend, Yueng. Wong soon finds himself undermined at every turn, but refuses to quit his noble crusade, which endears him to the rest of the staff. When Yueng is diagnosed with a brain tumor, the bitter head surgeon refuses to operate. Enlisting the help of some unorthodox practitioners of Chinese medicine, Wong prepares to perform an undercover procedure that will put his medical skills to the ultimate test..
