Directed by young Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Siu Pong, Fish Story is a beautifully touching look at the lives of children who come from families living under the poverty line. The film made appearances at several film festivals, including the South Taiwan Festival and Festival de Film Ecrans de Chine, and won Best Documentary at the 2013 FIRST International Film Festival.

J was born in Hong Kong and is raised by his single mother, who is from Mainland China. They live together in a tiny room measuring less than 100 square feet. Due to visa problems, J’s mother often returns to Mainland China, and when she does, she sends J to stay with his classmate Jacky’s family, who are from Vietnam. Director Wong gives audiences a look at Hong Kong society through the eyes of these children from marginalized families. What is Hong Kong society to them? What are their hopes and dreams? What do “family,” “education” and “achievement” mean to these children?.
