Four Loves (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)
Carina Lau, Nina Li, Pauline Wong, and Crystal Kwok are the titular Four Loves (1989) in this unlikely romantic comedy written and directed by Jamie Luk, better known for playing thuggish punching bags in vintage Shaw Brothers martial arts movies. Luk reveals himself to be quite the softy behind the camera, crafting a frisky yet tender film that chronicles the romantic misadventures of a group of young women transplanted from war-torn Shanghai to Hong Kong. With Leon Lai, Simon Yam, Derek Yee, and Ray Lui among the ladies’ potential suitors, Four Loves makes for fine cinematic star-gazing.
Fleeing the chaos of 1940s Shanghai, sisters Li Fong (Wong) and Li Ching (Kwok) decide to start a new life with their cousin Hsiao Chun (Lau) in Hong Kong. En route they pick up the scrappy Pei Ling (Li), who uses her street smarts to keep the girls out of trouble. Romance awaits in Hong Kong, but with the temperamental Hsiao Cheung at her fiance’s throat and Pei Ling stealing every man who comes Li Fong’s way, it’s going to take a lot of work for the girls to find their “happily ever after!”.
