Director Kore-eda Hirokazu (Nobody Knows) subverts the samurai film genre with Hana Yori mo Naho (a.k.a. Hana). The film stars Okada Junichi of pop group V6 as Sozaemon, a samurai who journeys from Matsumoto to Edo with the tried-and-true goal of avenging his father’s death. Sozaemon may have revenge as a goal, but his days are filled in a less intense manner. He resides in a broken down tenement with a menagerie of lower class folk, and spends his time teaching the neighborhood children, relaxing with his friends, and even romancing a beautiful widow (Miyazawa Rie). Life is good for Sozaemon.

However, trouble soon finds him in the form of local toughs and even other samurai. But Sozaemon’s way of dealing with conflict is unexpected, to say the least. When danger approaches, Sozaemon either gets whupped by the opposition, or even runs away! When his father’s killer (Asano Tadanobu) finally makes his presence known, Sozaemon must fulfill his duty as a samurai, and either exact revenge or die an honorable death. The stage is set for an iconic samurai showdown…but is the way of the samurai really the way for Sozaemon?.
