Commissioned by South Korea’s National Human Rights Commission, If You Were Me is an innovative omnibus film project to promote tolerance and human rights and shed light on the hardships disadvantaged people face in Korea. Released in 2012, the sixth installment of the series features three shorts by up-and-coming indie filmmakers Min Yong Geun (Re-encounter), Park Jung Bum (Journals of Musan) and Lee Sang Chul and Shin A Ga (Jesus Hospital). “Dear Duhan,” Park Jung Bum’s short about a disabled boy whose friend steals from him, sensitively depicts the experiences and conflicts of the disabled. Min Yong Geun broaches the topic of conscientious objection in “Ice River,” in which a Jehovah’s Witness chooses prison over mandatory military service despite his mother’s objections. Lee Sang Chul and Shin A Ga’s “Bong-gu on Delivery” follows an elderly man who lends a helping hand to a lost child but ends up getting accused of kidnapping.
