Toki wo Kakeru Shojo, written by renowned sci-fi novelist Tsutsui Yasutaka (The World Sinks Except Japan), has previously been adapted into manga, anime series, and live-action film, but the 2006 animated feature film offers a different take on the story. Rather than being a straightforward adaptation, Hosoda Mamoru’s The Girl Who Leapt Through Time presents an updated version, or rather a continuation, of the story. Set some twenty years after the novel’s timeline, the film follows the adventures of a young girl, different from the original protagonist, but with the same time-traveling abilities.

Bumbling high school student Konno Makoto rides her bike recklessly, is often late to school, and does poorly on her exams. On top of that, lately she’s been having odd visions and hearing strange voices. One day on her way home from school, she is again riding her bike too fast – too fast to stop herself from hitting an oncoming train. In a flash, Makoto is mysteriously transported back in time just enough to avoid the accident. After discovering her “time leaping” abilities, Makoto uses it liberally to make life more pleasant – no more tardiness, no more blown exams, no more little sister eating her pudding. When relationship issues begin to arise between Makoto and her friends Chiaki and Kousuke, she again falls back on time leaping to avoid awkward situations, only to get herself into further messes. Makoto learns the hard way that playing with time has consequences…

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is produced by Studio Madhouse, whose titles include all four Kon Satoshi films and a long list of anime favorites like Trigun, Ninja Scroll, Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, and the Death Note anime series. Though the film opened in a small number of theaters, it garnered great reviews, building an audience through word of mouth, and picked up quite a few awards. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time beat out blockbuster contenders Tales from Earthsea and Brave Story to take home the Best Animated Film award at the 30th Japan Academy Awards.

Studio Ghibli and Grave of the Fireflies director Takahata Isao create a magical, but sobering tale about preservation with 1994’s Pom Poko. The fantasy film takes us into the world of the Tanukis (Japanese raccoon dogs), who are about to take on the human world to ensure their own survival in a rapidly developing Japan. Takahata blends elements of traditional Japanese folklore and a strong message advocating for environmental protection into a wonderfully strange tale about a courageous group of animals fighting to protect their home. At the time of its release, Pom Poko won the Best Animated Film Award at the Mainichi Film Concours and represented Japan at the Academy Awards Best Foreign Film race that year.

In the 1960’s, the lives of the Tanukis living in the hills of Western Tokyo are threatened when urban development moves into their area. Since then, natural resources (including land) have become so scarce that groups of Tanukis are now fighting each other for their habitat. Before the fight goes further, matriarch Oroku urges them to stop fighting and use the effort to put a stop the human world’s development. Soon, the Tanukis unite in their fight against the humans. When their first several plans didn’t work, Oroku comes with a risky plan so crazy that it might work after all..

Patlabor, or Mobile Police Patlabor, is a classic name to anime fans. The police mecha franchise is the brainchild of Headgear, which consists of screenwriter Ito Kazunori, composer Kawai Kenji, scenarist Yuki Masami, character designer Takada Akemi, and, most notably, director Oshii Mamoru. The popular franchise has over the years spawned a manga, three anime series, and three feature-length films, the first of which was released in 1989. Directed by Oshii, this second Patlabor film was released in 1993 and, like other entries in the franchise, revolves around the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Special Vehicle Division 2 unit, which investigates crimes and accidents involving labor robots, or labors.

Set three years after the events of the first movie, Patlabor 2 is darker and more mature than previous franchise releases, venturing into greater political and philosophical musings and implications. When a United Nations Labors team is attacked, it marks the beginning of war for Japan. As time ticks down, the Special Vehicle Division and other Japanese police units rush to prepare Japan against impending terrorist attacks, and panic slowly settles in the streets of Tokyo. Matters become even more complicated when the team discovers that the leader of the terrorist group is Captain Nagumo’s former teacher and lover..
