Japanese master filmmaker Kurosawa Kiyoshi returns to feature filmmaking for the first time in five years with Real, an unsettling head trip into the disturbing world of the subconscious. Sato Takeru (Rurouni Kenshin) stars as a young man who goes into the mind of his comatose girlfriend (Ayase Haruka) in an effort to revive her. Based on the novel by Inui Rokuro, Real is a mind-bending fantasy psychodrama about trauma, memories, and the roots that shape us into who we are. A competition film at the Locarno Film Festival, Real also co-stars Nakatani Miki (Memories of Matsuko), Odagiri Joe (The Great Passage), Koizumi Kyoko (Penance) and Sometani Shota (Himizu).

After a suicide attempt, manga writer Atsumi (Ayase Haruka) has been lying in a coma. In his effort to revive her, her boyfriend Koichi (Sato Takeru) decides to try an experimental technology called sensing that would take him into her mind. Through their dreamscape meetings, Koichi realizes the reason for Atsumi’s coma goes all the way to their childhood days.
