Long thought to be lost, the 1965 war classic The DMZ was rediscovered in 2005 and through the efforts of the Korean Film Archive, the seminal film now comes to DVD with English subtitles. One of director Park Sang Ho’s most representative films, The DMZ looks at the devastation of war through the eyes of two children left in the demilitarized zone after the Korean War.

In the summer of 1953, a young boy and girl find themselves in no man’s land after the signing of the Korean War armistice. Encountering everything from landmines to a North Korean spy, they try their hardest to survive in the DMZ, but the war is far from over for these kids with nowhere left to go. Presented in semi-documentary fashion, the film was shot on location in the DMZ 12 years after the armistice, providing an emotionally harrowing and historically noteworthy account of life at the 49th parallel in the aftermath of the Korean War.

This release includes a 45-minute Park Sang Ho documentary and still gallery, plus an English-Korean booklet..

Sex is Zero, the wild, raunchy sex comedy that exploded the Korean box office with over 4.5 million moviegoers in 2002, unveils its sequel Sex is Zero 2. Prepare for an upgraded suite of sexual gags and bathroom humor surrounding a bunch of hormone-raging college students. All of the original gang is back in action for the second installment with the exception of Ha Ji Won who makes a brief cameo appearance in the opening scene. Leading the pack of testosterone-wired hyenas are Lim Chang Jung (Scout) and Choi Sung Kook (Master Kims) who offer plenty of ad-libs (and libidos!) throughout the film. The sequel sold 1.5 million tickets in just two weeks with much media buzz over its sexual content, language, and nudity, plus the film’s new additions Song Ji Hyo (Wishing Stairs) and Lee Hwa Seon (Seducing Mr. Perfect). Keeping in tune with the current trend, the visually enticing aerobic girls from the original are now flashing more flesh than ever as varsity swimmers and the martial arts club is sporting more kicks and punches as a K-1 fight club. Also be sure to indulge in a little guilty pleasure as the film’s funniest bloopers roll out during the end credits. Though not for the faint of heart as many of the scenes are larded with shocking, in-your-face sexual innuendoes, the film sprinkles in some heartwarming, tender moments that makes this comedy classic sweeter the second time around.

How to advance beyond first base? That’s what Eun Sik (Lim Chang Jung) wants to know. Although into the third year of their relationship, Eun Sik and his curvaceous varsity swimmer girlfriend Kyung Ah (Song Ji Hyo) have yet to venture beyond the kissing stage. Deeply frustrated, Eun Sik explores other ways of relieving himself from the growing demands of his raging hormones with a little assistance from a naked female statue outside campus. Appalled at his friend’s desperate and somewhat embarrassing measure, playboy Sung Kook (Choi Sung Kook) comes to Eun Sik’s rescue and offers his invaluable “wisdom” on making a home run, but Eun Sik’s new behavior shocks Kyung Ah. Just as Kyung Ah’s agonizing over why her wholesome boyfriend has suddenly turned into a pervert, dashing prosecutor Ki Joo shows up to sweep her off her feet with his suave lady-killer charm, signaling the start of a very tight race for the bed..

There is nothing like the sisterly bond held together by a common thread of interest: money! Celebrating girl power or rather “ajumma” (housewife) power, first-time director Kim Sang Man’s action comedy Girl Scout unites four generations of fearless women ranging in age from the 20s to 60s for one bold mission: to reclaim their missing money swindled by a fellow “kye” member. “Kye” is a private fund (commonly practiced by many housewives in Korea), wherein each member of the group contributes a fixed amount of money on a monthly basis, then takes turns receiving the group’s savings in a lump sum. This funny and charming money-chasing adventure sees My Lovely Sam-soon‘s heroine Kim Sun Ah (S Diary) making a lively turn as a feisty divorcee who is not afraid to take matters into her own hands. She is joined by veteran actress Na Moon Hee (Mission Possible: Kidnapping Granny K) who plays a quirky grandma, along with comedian-turned-actress Lee Kyung Sil (Bad Housewife). With will of iron and nerves of steel, these four courageous women who call themselves the “Bong Chon 3-dong Girl Scout” flex their muscles and brains for one of the best feel-good chick flicks of 2008.

Thirty-something Mi Kyung (Kim Sun Ah) who drives a van for a living dabbles in small-time investment hoping to score big one day. She belongs to a monthly private fund gathering which includes lovable kleptomaniac granny Yi Man (Na Moon Hee) who still works at the local supermarket to support her deadbeat son; forty-something widow Bong Sun (Lee Kyung Sil) who’s always looking for odd jobs to make ends meet for her two sick children; and twenty-something debt-stricken Eun Ji (Ko Joon Hee, Crazy For Love). Sharing nothing in common except for their monthly collective fund, these four women lead separate lives; but things are about to change when one of their “kye” members runs off with their money. Infuriated, Mi Kyung and her three unlikely partners form a special squad called “Bongchon 3-dong Girl Scout” to catch their thief, only to find themselves sinking into a deeper mess.

Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain…

Bringing in over seven million admissions at the box office, nostalgic blockbuster Sunny is Korea’s feel-good hit of the year. Jumping between the roaring eighties and the present-day, the crowd-pleasing film follows the friendship of seven girls, then and now. Shim Eun Kyung (Romantic Heaven), Kang So Ra (4th Period Mystery), and Min Hyo Rin (Romance Town) lead the teenage rebellion as feisty, troublemaking schoolgirls whose high school brawling days cross over with the democracy protests of the eighties. Coming of age amid pop tunes, sunny times, and fearless friendship, what lives await yesterday’s reckless dreamers when they meet again as adults? Winning Best Director at the Daejong Film Awards with just his second film, writer-director Kang Hyung Chul follows Speedy Scandal with another critically acclaimed smash hit that connects with audiences of all ages.

The picture of beauty and composure, forty-something mother and wife Na Mi (Yoo Ho Jung) seems to have achieved the ideal life. Taiwanese actress Shu Qi leads the cast of the highly anticipated action comedy My Wife is a Gangster 3. Released in 2001, the first My Wife is a Gangster, starring Shin Eun Kyung as a tough female gang leader, was a big hit in Korea, selling over five million tickets. Shin reprised her role for the sequel, My Wife is a Gangster 2, but the film failed to take off at the box office despite a high-profile cameo appearance by Zhang Ziyi. The series was originally meant to continue with Shin and Zhang facing off in a third film, but both actresses eventually opted out, paving the way for a franchise facelift and a much needed narrative kick.

My Wife is a Gangster 3 now features a completely new story with a completely new cast. Shu Qi steps into the lead role opposite the always interesting Lee Bum Soo (The City of Violence) and a solid supporting cast, including Oh Ji Ho (Super Rookie), Shaw Brothers actor Ti Lung, Hong Kong action film regular Ken Lo, and actress Hyun Young (The Legend of Seven Cutter) who provides much of the film’s laughs. Director Cho Jin Kyo, who also helmed the first installment of the series, approaches the story and his international cast with a refreshing new formula this time around, modeling My Wife is a Gangster 3 into a Roman Holiday action comedy.

Chinese-Korean Lim Aryong (Shu Qi) gets sent to South Korea to lay low by her triad leader father (Ti Lung) who is engaged in a bloody power struggle in Hong Kong. In Korea, Aryong meets kindhearted gangster Ki Chul (Lee Bum Soo) who, unaware of her identity, tries to protect her from the legions of thugs hunting her down. Little does he realize, Aryong is more than capable of defending herself..

TV producer An Pan Seok makes his big screen, directorial debut with this gentle drama about a North Korean couple and their efforts to stay together and emigrate to the South.

Cha Seung Won (The Big Scene, Blood Rain) stars as Seon Ho, a horn player for Pyongyang’s state propaganda band who lives an affluent and privileged life in sharp contrast to many of his fellow North Koreans. He is from a good family and has a beautiful fiancee, museum guide Yeon Hwa (Jo Yi Jin from The Aggressives). However, when it is revealed that Seon Ho’s grandfather is not the dead, revered Communist hero that everybody thought he was, but is in fact living in exile in Seoul, the family is forced to flee to the South. Seon Ho is unable to take his beloved Yeon Hwa with him, and so begins his struggle to bring her across the border to join him.

The film has been praised for its realistic portrayal of life, not only in North Korea, but also as an immigrant in Seoul. Over The Border plays as both an informative expose into this oft-neglected angle of the North/South divide, as well as a romantic melodrama of two lovers torn apart by powers beyond their control. The film won for Best Supporting Actress (Shim Hye Jin) and Best New Actress (Jo Yi Jin) at the 44th Daejong Film Awards.
