Inspired by the hit Mainland drama Dwelling Narrowness, TVB tackles one of the most pressing social problems in Hong Kong – the ultra-high property prices and overcrowded living condition – in its new drama L’Escargot. The series offers a realistic and harrowing look at the housing plight of Hong Kong people, readily striking a chord with the mass audience to achieve robust ratings despite being aired in a less desirable time slot. Renovation contractor Kwan Ka On (Michael Miu) and his homemaker wife Sze Long Kiu (Sonija Kwok) work hard for their dream of buying a new house for the family. Unfortunately, On has to shelve their plan in order to help his younger brother Kwan Ka Hong (Oscar Leung) with his financial difficulties as a result of some bad investments, and that puts a strain on the marriage between On and Kiu. Hoping to share the heavy burden on On’s shoulders, younger sister Kwan Ka Lok (Linda Chung) seeks help from successful property developer Jim Ko (Michael Tse), who takes the opportunity to develop an illicit affair with her, thus wrecking her relationship with boyfriend Ting Koon Fung (Ron Ng). In contrast, the youngest brother Kwan Ka Wing (Him Law) would rather spend all his income every month than committing to a mortgage. For the Kwan family, the dream of securing a happy and peaceful home turns out to be an endless nightmare….
