Released in 1979, LUPIN III The Castle of Cagliostro is the second film featuring manga artist Money Punch’s gentleman thief Ars ne Lupin III, and perhaps more significantly, it is also the first film directed by Miyazaki Hayao. As co-writer and director, Miyazaki inserted many elements into The Castle of Cagliostro that would later form parts of his signature style.

After successfully making off with money from the Monte Carlo Casino, Lupin and his right-hand man Daisuke Jigen discover that the bills are actually counterfeits from the Grand Duchy of Cagliostro. Wanting to get to the source of the counterfeits, Lupin and Jigen head to the small country. Soon after arriving, they get mixed up in a chase and try to save a young girl from a group of people pursuing her. The girl is captured in the end, but leaves Lupin with a ring. As it turns out, the girl is Clarisse, the princess of Cagliostro, who is being forced to marry regent Count Cagliostro. The Count hopes to use the marriage to consolidate his power and obtain the treasure that can only be accessed with both his and Clarisse’s signet rings. Lupin becomes determined to save the princess, and gets help from Jigen, Goemon, Fujiko and even Inspector Zenigata..
