Originally worshipped primarily by fishermen, Mazu, the Chinese goddess of the sea, has become the patron of Taiwan, with people praying to the deity for matters ranging from health to love. Every year, pilgrims go on a tour of Taiwan’s major Mazu temples to receive and spread blessings. Covering a distance of 340km, the tour goes through Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin and Chiayi, passes by 100 Mazu temples and is one of the biggest religious events in the world, after Hajj, the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, and Kumbh Mela, the Hindu pilgrimage to sacred rivers.

Serving as producer, director and host, superstar Richie Jen documents the 2013 Mazu tour in Mazu Procession. Having grown up in Changhua, Richie excitedly observed the Procession for many years before finally beginning to participate a couple of years ago. With this documentary, Richie hopes to show audiences that the Mazu Procession isn’t just a religious event it’s a social one, too. From the 80-year-old grandmother who joins the pilgrimage to pray for her family’s health to the ordinary citizens who come out in droves to cheer on and offer food for the pilgrims, Mazu Procession ably relays the joy of the Procession and the warmth of the Taiwanese people..
