Based on the life of Yaohan founder Wada Katsu, 1984 television drama Oshin remains one of the Japan’s most popular television series. Now, the story of a woman who stayed strong in the face of impossible obstacles is hitting the big screen with director Togashi Shin’s Oshin. The heartrending drama adapts the first part of the story, covering young Oshin’s life as a housekeeper to support her family. The 2013 version stars adorable newcomer Hamada Kokone chosen from 2,500 aspiring young actresses across the country as the titular character, Ueto Aya (Thermae Romae) as Shin’s mother and SMAP’s Inagaki Goro as Shin’s father.
1907, Yamagata Prefecture. Seven-year-old Shin (Hamada Kokone) is sent to work as a housekeeper for a timber trader to support her family, much to the hesitation of her loving mother (Ueto Aya). Life is difficult in her new home, but Shin works hard and takes her harsh situation in stride. However, when she learns that her grandmother is dying, Shin escapes the timber trader’s home and attempts to walk home in the harsh winter cold….
