In the near future, an advanced system of DNA profiling has been developed that revolutionizes the very nature of crime investigation. Cold and calm scientist Kagura Ryuhei (Ninomiya Kazunari) firmly believes in the infallibility of the DNA profiling system he’s created. DNA doesn’t lie. Through analysis of evidence found at a crime scene, he can reconstruct the physical and psychological profile of the criminal and identify the likely culprit by following the DNA trail. As the National Police Agency pushes forth a large-scale initiative to compile a database of everyone’s DNA, a series of mysterious murders occur and the victims include Ryuhei’s partner Saki (Mizuhara Kiko), an autistic savant who programmed the DNA profiling system. Evidence extracted from the crime scene, however, reveals the killer is… Ryuhei. Suddenly on the run from the law, Ryuhei must get to the bottom of the mystery and conspiracy surrounding the system he built and the first person he needs to confront is himself.
One of the biggest live-action Japanese films of 2013, blockbuster thriller Platinum Data combines sci-fi suspense and crime action with police state conspiracy and psychodrama into an unpredictable roller coaster of a mystery. Arashi’s Ninomiya Kazunari impresses as the beleaguered hero whose complex character is gradually revealed, while Toyokawa Etsushi (20th Century Boys) co-stars as the dogged detective investigating the case. Based on a Higashino Keigo novel, Platinum Data is directed by Otomo Keishi (Rurouni Kenshin) and also co-stars Mizuhara Kiko (Norwegian Wood), Anne (Yokai Ningen Bem), Suzuki Honami (The Floating Castle) and Namase Katsuhisa (Gokusen)..
