For his 49th and final film Ichimai no Hagaki (a.k.a. Postcard), veteran Japanese director Shindo Kaneto creates a passionate indictment against war. In the tradition of great anti-war films, Ichimai no Hagaki shows that the real war is not fought on the battlefields, but at home by those waiting for the soldiers to go home. Based on Shindo’s own World War II experiences, the film tells the stories of two characters searching for a direction after the war a soldier who returns home to find that he has lost his family, and a woman left alone after losing both her husbands in the war. A beautiful swan song for a legendary career, Ichimai no Hagaki received accolades across Japan and even represented the country in the race for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards.

Matsuyama (Toyokawa Etsushi) is a lowly ranked soldier in a 100-man unit. When their superiors decide to split up the unit with most off to fight overseas and the rest taking up ho-hum duties in local bases Matsuyama’s friend Sadao asks him to take a postcard to his wife Tomoko (Otake Shinobu). Meanwhile, Tomoko has been fighting her own war at home when her in-laws asks her to marry Sadao’s younger brother after they learn of Sadao’s death. After losing her second husband to the war and her in-laws, Tomoko is left alone in a home that she never truly belonged in..
