Using her real-life experiences and memories, a Japanese housewife writes a heart-warming script that wins a competition at the local radio station. However, minutes before the play is about to be performed live on air, the prima-donna lead actress decides that she wishes to change the name of her character, a simple fisherman’s wife from a small town in Japan, to the more glamorous American name “Mary-Jane.” She is so adamant that she refuses to take part in the performance if her request is not met.

Not to be outdone, her co-star also demands to change his name – to “Donald McDonald!” When the producers panic and concede that they may as well relocate the story to New York, it triggers a hilarious chain of events as the performers struggle to contend with the mounting implausibilities of the story, each others constant improvisations, and the fragile egos of all concerned.
