On March 11, 2011, a powerful earthquake and the tsunami waves that followed killed tens of thousands of people in northeast Japan. Journalist Ishii Kota chronicled his ten days in the town of Kamaishi one of the hardest-hit areas in the disasters in his book Itai Shinsai, Tsunami of Hate ni. Writer-director Kimizuka Ryoichi (the Bayside Shakedown series, Nobody to Watch Over Me) recreates those ten days in Reunion. The film stars Nishida Toshiyuki (Ghost of a Chance, Outrage Beyond) as a retired funeral home employee who brought order to Kamaishi’s temporary funeral home and helped families of the victims properly put their loved ones to rest. Proceeds from the film were donated to the recovery effort in the disaster zone.

After the March 11th tsunami virtually wiped away half of Kamaishi, a temporary morgue was set up in a local gym to handle the dead. After the disaster, retired undertaker Chiba Atsushi (Nishida Toshiyuki) volunteered to take charge of the funeral home. Using his years of experience, Atsushi taught rescue workers to handle the bodies with care, arranged for the bodies to be presented in a respectable state to family members and spoke softly to them as he prepared them for their final journey into the crematorium. Soon, rescue workers, city employees and medical professionals working on the site were so touched by Atsushi’s dedication to the cause that they eventually came together to lend a helping hand..
