After a lengthy absence from the romance genre, Sammi Cheng finally returns to star opposite Louis Koo in director Johnnie To and screenwriter Wai Ka Fai’s Romancing in Thin Air, the team’s first film together since 2003’s Love for All Seasons. In contrast to their recent urban romantic comedy Don’t Go Breaking My Heart, the latest To-Wai collaboration takes romantic drama to a new height in the mythical Shangri-La, supposedly located some 3,800m above sea level in China’s Yunnan Province. The breathtaking high-altitude snowscape provides the backdrop to an entrancing tale that tugs at heartstrings like nothing before, thanks in part to the profound chemistry between the charming screen couple, and a great supporting cast that includes Gao Yuanyuan, Wang Baoqiang, Crystal Huang, Wilfred Lau, Tanny Tien, and Li Guangjie.

Movie superstar Michael (Louis Koo) is roundly humiliated when his bride, actress Yuanyuan (Gao Yuanyuan) ditches him at the altar to run off with her childhood sweetheart, a simple miner (Wang Baoqiang). Resorting to alcoholism to soothe his broken heart, a drunken and dejected Michael inadvertently ends up in a truck, which takes him to a small inn on the remote mountains of Shangri-La! The innkeeper Sue (Sammi Cheng) takes this unexpected guest in, and nurses him back to health. Meanwhile, Michael finds out that Sue used to be his biggest fan. Love gradually breeds between the two lonely hearts, but Sue still can’t get over her lost husband Xiaotian (Li Guangjie), who disappeared into the forest nearby eight years ago and has never returned….
