When it comes to jidaigeki (period drama) and chambara (samurai cinema), not very many people can lay claims to authenticity, but Mikami Yasuo, the writer and director of 2013’s Shundou, is one of the few who can. Mikami produced the original 16mm Shundou film 33 years ago when he was only 24 years old. His clout is such that he assembled a cast and crew composed of some of the most well-known veterans of the jidaigeki genre for this 2013 remake, including actor Wakabayashi Go (The Fall of Ako Castle), sound engineer Ito Shinichi (Sakuradamon Incident) and swordplay choreographer Kuze Hiroshi (Bushi no Ichibun).

The year is 1735. It has been three years since western Japan suffered a devastating famine, and it appears that normalcy is starting to return to the land. The lord deputy of the Inaba domain in the Sanin region, Araki Minayoshi (Wakabayashi Go), is beginning to think the same when he is told that the shogunate has sent Matsumiya Juzo (Meguro Yuki, Legend of the Eight Samurai) to Inaba on a mission. Suspicious of the shogunate’s intentions, Araki tells Funase Taigo (Nakahara Takeo, The Floating Castle) to keep watch on Matsumiya. After a while, Funase tells Araki that he has intercepted a secret letter sent by Matsumiya and intended for the shogunate. The contents of the letter reveal something very important about the fate of the Inaba domain..
