Exchanging messages written on folded fans in the secret code of nushu (or “women’s writing”), the two girls develop an intimate and seemingly unshakeable relationship that eventually comes under severe test when destiny takes them down different paths of life…

In contemporary Shanghai, Nina (also played by Li) is reunited with her long-separated laotong Sophia (Jeon again) when the latter is hospitalized in a coma following a car accident. As they have fallen out with each other for many years, the key to their reconciliation lies in the story of their ancestors – Snow Flower and Lily – hidden in their secret messages….
