Zhang Ziyi is beautiful, lovable, and absolutely hilarious in her first comedic role as the eponymous heroine of Sophie’s Revenge. The first film produced by Zhang, the Hollywood-style urban romantic comedy embraces the genre with heartwarming cinematic gusto, throwing beautiful people in beautiful places into hapless Bridget Jones-style dilemmas. Fan Bingbing (Shinjuku Incident) does a bit of image debunking herself as Zhang’s gorgeous and manipulative onscreen nemesis. Competing for the hands of the leading ladies are two of Asia’s biggest heartthrobs, Korean star So Ji Sub (Rough Cut) and Taiwan actor Peter Ho (My DNA Says I Love You). Directed by Chinese-American director Eva Jin, Sophie’s Revenge is a feel-good feast for the eyes and heart, from the dazzling art direction to the whimsical animation sequences to the tried-but-true story of love, laughter, and tears.
High-strung comic artist Sophie (Zhang Ziyi) is out for revenge after losing her fiance Jeff (So Ji Sub) to insufferable actress Joanna (Fan Bingbing). Chronicling her strategies to win Jeff back in her budding book “The Handbook of Love”, Sophie lays out her war plan step by step, but things have a habit of backfiring in wacky ways. She enlists Joanna’s ex, affable photographer Gordon (Peter Ho), to help break up the lovebirds. As their efforts to sway Jeff begin to take effect, Sophie and Gordon find themselves falling for each other instead.
