Acclaimed Taiwanese director Chung Mong Hong previously won the Golden Horse Award for Best Director for his 2010 film The Fourth Portrait, so it’s no surprise that his latest, the 2013 psycho horror film Soul, was nominated for multiple prizes at the 50th Golden Horse Awards. Taiwan’s official submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the suspenseful film uses the cover of demonic possession to explore a complex father-son relationship portrayed by Joseph Chang (GF*BF) and Shaw Brothers veteran Jimmy Wang.

A-chuan (Joseph Chang) works at a sushi restaurant in Taipei. One day, he passes out while at work. After being examined by a doctor, he is sent back to his hometown in rural Taichung to stay with his estranged father, Wang (Jimmy Wang). However, his condition doesn’t seem to improve, as he remains withdrawn and unwilling to communicate with the outside world. When A-chuan’s sister Yun (Chen Shiang Chyi, The River) returns home for a visit, she notes that her brother seems strange. Wang won’t acknowledge that something is amiss until one day he returns home to find Yun lying dead in a pool of blood, while A-chuan calmly sits nearby. The only words A-chuan offers his father are: “I saw this body was empty, so I moved in.”.
