Based on Tong Hua’s historical romance novel Da Mo Yao, 2014’s Sound of the Desert is a sprawling romantic epic set in the deserts of China, where the political machinations of various factions in the capital play out.
Before being adopted by a kindly Han Chinese man, orphaned Xiongnu girl Jin Yu (Cecilia Liu, Startling By Each Step) spent years wandering the vast desert with wolves, who treated her as one of their own. She’s forced to flee to the desert once again when her adoptive father is murdered during a period of political turmoil. Now going by the name Xin Yue, Jin Yu meets two men: gentle scholar Mo Xun (Hu Ge, Xuan Yuan Sword) and cocky general Wei Wuji (Eddie Peng, Unbeatable). As she becomes entangled in romance with the two, she also finds that she’s unable to escape the murky politics of the capital, even in the desert..
