Before hitting it big with the internationally successful Shall We Dance?, director Suo Masayuki helmed the multiple award-winning comedy, Sumo Do, Sumo Don’t, a film which tells the story of a ragtag group of losers who band together and take up the traditional Japanese sport of sumo but in this case, against their will! The plot revolves around a Sumo Wrestling Club at a Japanese university that just can’t seem to lure any new members. In the modern era, it seems that the youth of Japan would rather spend their time playing baseball or basketball than engage in an “outdated” sport like sumo. Desperate to reverse that trend, Professor Anayama (Akira Emoto) blackmails a graduating senior named Shuhei (Masahiro Motoki) into signing up for the team. Wanting to graduate, Shuhei agrees to the professor’s terms, and along with a group of misfits that includes a professional wrestler, an overweight outcast, and a British exchange student, the team begins training for an upcoming event. But after a devastating loss at the tournament, the once-resistant members choose to remain in the club and train seriously for the next competition. But can these losers do the impossible?

Although certainly a crowd-pleaser, Sumo Do, Sumo Don’t isn’t your average comedy. Not only was the film named Best Picture at the Japanese Academy Awards, but its director, Suo Masayuki took home Best Director and Best Screenplay honors as well. But that’s not all; Masahiro Motoki and Naoto Takenaka won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. With multiple honors from the Blue Ribbon Awards, Hochi Film Awards, and Kinema Junpo Awards, Sumo Do, Sumo Don’t is a charming film about underdogs that’ll have you cheering all the way!.
