Director Cheng Chang Ho, who gave the world the kung fu classics King Boxer and Broken Oath, goes in search of The Devil’s Treasure in this taut action outing from 1973. Cheng’s trusted fight choreographer, the pre-fame Sammo Hung, is on hand to provide his usual expertise, but martial arts displays take a back seat to suspense and extended chase scenes as Cheng weaves a more psychological thriller. The story of a Hong Kong salvage diver pursued across Asia by Japanese ex-military men after he recovers some World War II-era gold, The Devil’s Treasure also features a performance by Bruce Lee’s leading lady Nora Miao (Way of the Dragon, Fist of Fury).

As the Japanese pulled out of Hong Kong at the close of World War II, a precious cargo of gold sunk to the bottom of the sea. Decades later, intrepid diver Wang Chun has located the treasure, but no sooner than it is raised to the surfaced does the former Japanese general who lost the gold in the first place reappear. Wang’s boss is murdered by the general’s thugs, but the diver manages to escape with the treasure. Fleeing Hong Kong with his wife and the loot, Wang enters into a dangerous game of hide-and-seek as the ruthless general vows to hunt him to the ends of the earth..
