First to break stereotypes of eunuchs on television, this historical 63-episode series follows the tumultuous life of Kim Chuh Sun who became a royal eunuch to be with his childhood lover So Hwa, King Seong Jong’s concubine. Unveiling the intimate details of eunuchs, the drama covers every chapter of their lives starting from their childhood to their castration to the arduous process of becoming royal servants. Loosely based on the real-life story of Joseon Dynasty’s most loyal eunuch Kim Chuh Sun who served five kings in his time, The King & I details the plight of his youth all the way to his death which by far remains one of the most brutal deaths ever recorded in Korean history.

Featuring a well-balanced lineup of both new and established actors, King And I stars Oh Man Seok (The Vineyard Man) in his career-defining role as the legendary Kim Chuh Sun. Young rising starlets Ku Hye Sun (Heart of Nineteen), Jun Hye Bin (A Witch In Love), and ex-Fin.K.L member Lee Jin make their first appearances in a period drama, alongside veteran actors Yang Mi Kyung (Dae Jang Geum) and Chun Kwang Ryul (Jumong).

Sacrificing all in the name of love, Kim Chuh Sun (Oh Man Seok) decides to castrate himself. It’s the only way to enter the palace and protect his childhood love So Hwa (Ku Hye Sun) who was forced to become King Seong Jong’s concubine. After a painstaking process, Chuh Sun becomes a royal eunuch. Meanwhile, So Hwa’s royal status rises to the top upon the death of the queen, but having no formidable family backing, So Hwa is falsely accused and exiled from the palace. Despite Chuh Sun’s desperate attempt to save her, he is eventually ordered to bestow the poison to So Hwa. She dies leaving her young son, Yeon San Goon, in the care of Chuh Sun. Soon Yeon San Goon becomes the king, but when he learns of his mother’s wrongful death, the palace drowns in a bloodbath. With the country in turmoil, Chuh Sun appeals to his king to stop the madness. But will his king hear his plea?.
