Based on the incredible true story of Taiwanese environmental activist Yang Rumen, director Cho Li’s (Zoom Hunting) 2014 film The Rice Bomber gives audiences a compelling look into a part of Taiwanese society foreigners do not often see.

Yang Rumen (Huang Jian Wei, Yang Yang) is a normal young Taiwanese man who returns to his hometown in rural Changhua after fulfilling his mandatory military service. Having been raised by his farmer grandparents, he has witnessed first-hand farmers’ struggles with the government over produce prices. A series of events cause Rumen to begin advocating for more reasonable policies for the farming community. The intensity of his advocacy increases as he gets reacquainted with a childhood friend nicknamed “Troublemaker,” (Nikki Hsieh, Tai Chi Hero) the rebellious daughter of a shady figure with deep pockets. Eventually, his advocacy culminates in the act of protest Yang is famous for his planting of 17 “rice bombs” throughout Taipei between 2003 and 2004..
