The Tiger Mask (DVD) (Malaysia Version)
Written by Kajiwara Ikki and illustrated by Tsuji Naoki, Tiger Mask was a popular manga serialized in Bokura Magazine and later Weekly Shonen Magazine from 1968 to 1971. An anime adaptation aired 105 episodes between 1969 and 1971. Previously adapted to anime film twice in 1970, the property finally gets a live-action adaptation with up-and-coming director Ochiai Ken’s 2013 film, The Tiger Mask.
Date Naoto leaves the orphanage where he was raised when he is taken in by the mysterious Mr. X (Aikawa Sho, Helter Skelter). Mr. X, as it turns out, adopts children with the aim to train them to become fighters. As a young man, Naoto (Wentz Eiji, Nodame Cantabile: The Final Score) emerges as one of Mr. X’s top three fighters. He and the two other boys are given a Tiger Mask, which grants the wearer super-strength at the cost of rapidly draining his energy. Naoto is then thrust into an underground wrestling league whose earnings fund a criminal enterprise. After a tragic incident, Naoto leaves his wrestling life and goes to work at the orphanage, now run by Wakatsuki Ruriko (Natsuna, Gantz), the orphanage owner’s daughter and Naoto’s childhood friend. Happiness doesn’t last long, though. When a fire destroys the orphanage, Naoto finds he has to don the Tiger Mask again to find the person responsible..
