The Water Margin (a.k.a. Outlaws of the Marsh) is widely considered to be one of the four great masterworks in all of Chinese literature. Credited to authors Shi Nai An and Luo Guan Zhong, this literary classic centers on the adventures of one hundred and eight larger-than-life characters living in 12th century China. So well-beloved is this legendary work that it has inspired a slew of adaptations, including plays, television shows, comic books, and even video games!

Considering the book’s obvious appeal, it’s no surprise that the famous Shaw Brothers studio would adapt the novel for the silver screen. In fact, various episodes of the novel were re-imagined for the cinema in no less than seventeen pictures, including such films as The Water Margin, All Men are Brothers, Tiger Killer, and The Amorous Lotus Pan, to name but a few!

Perhaps one of the most intriguing Shaw Brothers adaptations, however, was one of the earliest, Three Sinners, a 1962 film helmed by Yan Jun, director of The Grand Substitution and The Iron Buddha. Based on one particular storyline in the larger work, Three Sinners weaves an intriguing story of romance, treachery, and death, all within the context of the traditional Huangmei Opera. Yan Jun casts his real-life wife, the elegant Li Li Hua, star of such Shaw Brothers films as The Goddess of Mercy and Vermillion Door, as one of the title characters, a woman who finds herself in the middle of a stormy love triangle involving her controlling husband (director Yan Jun serving double duty in a starring role) and a passionate lover (Chen Yan Yan). Fans of The Water Margin won’t want to miss out on this classic musical interpretation!.
