Only the fifth Korean film to cross the ten million admissions milestone, the 2009 Hollywood-style blockbuster disaster movie Haeundae has joined The Host, Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War, King and The Clown, and Silmido in Korea’s all-time top five grossing films. Helmed by Sex is Zero and My Boss, My Hero director Yoon Je Kyun, Haeundae is about Korea getting struck by a massive tsunami. The film’s title refers to its ground zero, popular Haeundae Beach located in southern port city Busan. The all-star ensemble cast of Sol Kyung Gu (Public Enemy), Park Joong Hoon (Radio Star), Ha Ji Won (Closer to Heaven), Uhm Jung Hwa (Insadong Scandal), and Lee Min Ki (A Million) play different people from different walks of life who are swept into the film’s human drama and thrilling battle for survival.

Rough-talking, soft-hearted former fisherman Man Sik (Sol Kyung Gu) runs a seafood joint by the sea, and watches out for Yeon Hee (Ha Ji Won) who struggles to run a restaurant by herself. They share a bond beyond friendship, but Man Sik can’t seem to confess his feelings, or tell Yeon Hee the truth about her father’s death at sea years ago. Man Sik’s earnest lifeguard brother Hyung Sik (Lee Min Ki) has fallen for a sassy girl (Kang Hye Won) from Seoul. Meanwhile, in another part of Korea alarmed geologist Kim Hee (Park Joong Hoon) discovers that a mega-tsunami is heading for the peninsula. With the authorities refusing to listen, he rushes to Haeundae where his estranged ex-wife Yu Jin (Uhm Jung Hwa) and daughter (Kim Yu Jung) are, but it’s already too late to escape….
