In Hula Girl, writer Habara Daisuke told the story of how a group of women in a mining town overcame the odds to become great hula dancers. In Tug of War!, Habara shows that a group of small town women can unite to become a champion tug of war team. Maiko Haaaan director Mizuta Nobuo directs this hilarious story, starring Inoue Mao (My Darling is a Foreigner) as a city hall PR employee who agrees to form a female tug of war team to save the school lunch factory that her mother works in. Made with the assistance of a real-life world champion tug of war team in Oita, Tug of War! is a hilarious and inspiring comedy about the importance of pulling your weight to achieve victory.
Chiaki (Inoue Mao) is an employee in Oita city hall’s public relations section. Oita was once on the map for a female tug of war team that has won the national championship three times. To promote the town, Oita’s mayor charges Chiaki with the task of forming a new champion female tug of war team for the city. Meanwhile, the school lunch factory that Chiaki’s mother Yoko (Matsuzaka Keiko) works in is in danger of shutting down. During Yoko and her fellow factory workers’ protest at city hall, Chiaki defuses the situation by promising that the factory will stay open if the factory workers form a tug of war team and win the championship.
