A touching film set in the vast landscape of Mongolia, Tuya’s Marriage won the Golden Bear at the 57th Berlin Film Festival. Director Wang Quan’an captures the inner struggles of a woman torn between her love for her husband and economic difficulties. Versatile actress Yu Nan, who has starred in three of Wang’s four movies thus far, convincingly delivers the tough character and vulnerable moments of Tuya, the main character of the film. Wang demonstrates his ability to tell a delicate story from a feminist angle, moving male and female viewers alike.
Tuya’s life seems more difficult than that of any other Mongolian woman, for she has to take care of the whole family after her husband, Bater, becomes disabled. Bater tries to convince Tuya to divorce him so that she can re-marry a financially sound husband, but Tuya refuses until she falls ill because of overwork. She starts looking for a new husband, who must agree to look after Bater….
