Inspired by a true story, Winter Butterfly depicts the plight of hunger and food shortage in North Korea through the struggles of a mother and son. Jin Ho (Jung Seung Won) may only be 11 years old, but he is the head of the household. He cares for his sick mother (Park So Yeon, His Last Gift), and gets by gathering and selling firewood. One day, after an argument with his mother, Jin Ho runs off to the woods alone, but he gets into an accident and loses his way in the mountains.
