One of the most controversial directors in contemporary China, Jia Zhangke (Still Life) exposes the lives of the oppressed in a rapidly changing modern-day China in A Touch of Sin, a dark and violent film about conflicts and tragedies based on true events. The film’s four interlinked stories of a prostitute, a migrant worker, a miner and a young worker (played by Jiang Wu, Wang Baoqiang, Zhang Jiayi and Jia’s wife and muse, Zhao Tao) voice out the people’s fight against humiliation and corruption and the enraged violence that follows. With no official release in China, A Touch of Sin received Best Screenplay at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, adding to Jia’s long list of overseas accolades..
