Jack Neo does it again with the two-part army comedy Ah Boys to Men, which turned into the highest-grossing Singapore film of all time. The blockbuster director applies his crowd-pleasing formula of comedy, satire and life lessons to military service, which is mandatory for men in Singapore. The two films revolve around the experiences of a group of recruits led by Joshua Tan who stars as the rich boy protagonist Ken.
In Part 1, Ken reluctantly enlists in National Service (NS) after trying and failing to defer the inevitable. During boot camp he meets and befriends other recruits from different backgrounds: Lobang (Wang Wei Liang), Aloysius (Maxi Lim) and I.P. Man (Noah Yap). When Ken gets dumped by his girlfriend, he decides he needs to get out of the army to win her back. His foolish plan, however, leads to disastrous consequences. It’s I.P. Man who loses his girlfriend to a punk in the second film. He and his buddies ambush the culprit, only to get counter-ambushed right after. In the ensuing brawl, Ken puts himself on the line to save Lobang, while Aloysius flees to save himself, causing a rift in the guys’ friendship.
