Cow director Guan Hu reunites with star Huang Bo in Design of Death, a very, very dark comedy based on the novel by Chen Tiejun. Shot in a remote area in Sichuan, the surreal film takes place in an isolated mountain town whose residents are hiding a very dark secret. Huang stars as Niu Jieshi, the town bully who spends his days terrorizing the townspeople and acting out of order simply because he likes to. Over time, everyone in town comes to develop hatred towards Niu, to the point of wanting him to disappear for good. When a former resident (Alec Su) returns to town after becoming a doctor, he comes up with a plan that offers a lethal solution to the town’s problem.
