Iri and Desert Dream director Zhang Lu tells a cross-cultural story of rare friendship at the China-North Korea border in his latest indie drama Dooman River, titled after the river that lies between the two countries. Twelve-year-old Chinese boy Chang Ho (Cui Jian) lives in a poor village near the Dooman River (or Tumen River), and he is glad to find a friend in North Korean refugee Jeong Jin (Li JingLin), who is the same age as him. Life is tough at the border, however, and the other villagers feel increasingly threatened by the desperate, impoverished refugees spilling into their town. Like in his previous films, Zhang employs a minimalist, elliptical style to observe and capture the sparse landscape and harsh life in the remote frontier region between China and North Korea. Winner of the special jury prize at the 2010 Paris Cinema International Film Festival..
