There is nothing like the sisterly bond held together by a common thread of interest: money! Celebrating girl power or rather “ajumma” (housewife) power, first-time director Kim Sang Man’s action comedy Girl Scout unites four generations of fearless women ranging in age from the 20s to 60s for one bold mission: to reclaim their missing money swindled by a fellow “kye” member. “Kye” is a private fund (commonly practiced by many housewives in Korea), wherein each member of the group contributes a fixed amount of money on a monthly basis, then takes turns receiving the group’s savings in a lump sum. This funny and charming money-chasing adventure sees My Lovely Sam-soon‘s heroine Kim Sun Ah (S Diary) making a lively turn as a feisty divorcee who is not afraid to take matters into her own hands. She is joined by veteran actress Na Moon Hee (Mission Possible: Kidnapping Granny K) who plays a quirky grandma, along with comedian-turned-actress Lee Kyung Sil (Bad Housewife). With will of iron and nerves of steel, these four courageous women who call themselves the “Bong Chon 3-dong Girl Scout” flex their muscles and brains for one of the best feel-good chick flicks of 2008.
Thirty-something Mi Kyung (Kim Sun Ah) who drives a van for a living dabbles in small-time investment hoping to score big one day. She belongs to a monthly private fund gathering which includes lovable kleptomaniac granny Yi Man (Na Moon Hee) who still works at the local supermarket to support her deadbeat son; forty-something widow Bong Sun (Lee Kyung Sil) who’s always looking for odd jobs to make ends meet for her two sick children; and twenty-something debt-stricken Eun Ji (Ko Joon Hee, Crazy For Love). Sharing nothing in common except for their monthly collective fund, these four women lead separate lives; but things are about to change when one of their “kye” members runs off with their money. Infuriated, Mi Kyung and her three unlikely partners form a special squad called “Bongchon 3-dong Girl Scout” to catch their thief, only to find themselves sinking into a deeper mess.
