Studio Ghibli and Grave of the Fireflies director Takahata Isao create a magical, but sobering tale about preservation with 1994’s Pom Poko. The fantasy film takes us into the world of the Tanukis (Japanese raccoon dogs), who are about to take on the human world to ensure their own survival in a rapidly developing Japan. Takahata blends elements of traditional Japanese folklore and a strong message advocating for environmental protection into a wonderfully strange tale about a courageous group of animals fighting to protect their home. At the time of its release, Pom Poko won the Best Animated Film Award at the Mainichi Film Concours and represented Japan at the Academy Awards Best Foreign Film race that year.

In the 1960’s, the lives of the Tanukis living in the hills of Western Tokyo are threatened when urban development moves into their area. Since then, natural resources (including land) have become so scarce that groups of Tanukis are now fighting each other for their habitat. Before the fight goes further, matriarch Oroku urges them to stop fighting and use the effort to put a stop the human world’s development. Soon, the Tanukis unite in their fight against the humans. When their first several plans didn’t work, Oroku comes with a risky plan so crazy that it might work after all.

Blu ray edition includes storyboards (in picture-in-picture mode), dubbing script, a special rakugo performance about Tanukis and trailers. It also comes with a picture label..

Based on a Hiiragi Aoi teen girl comic discovered by Miyazaki Hayao during his summer vacation, Whisper of the Heart was the first Studio Ghibli theatrical feature film that isn’t directed by studio co-founders Miyazaki or Takahata Isao. In a move to train a new generation of younger directors, Miyazaki’s script was instead handed over to Kondo Yoshifumi, who unfortunately passed away in 1997 with Whisper as his only directorial effort. A low-key drama with a sweet youth romance at its core, Whisper of the Heart transcended a typical children’s animated film with relatively more mature themes such as career ambitions and teenage life, making it appealing to viewers of all ages. The fantasy sequences in the film, based on the protagonist’s novel and starring a cat named The Baron, even became so popular with audiences that Studio Ghibli later brought back the character with The Cat Returns.

One day, junior high school student Shizuku left a book that includes her composition for a graduation song in school. When she returns to retrieve the book, she finds that a boy has picked it up and read it. He automatically becomes her enemy when he makes fun of the lyrics as “corny”. Later, Shizuku discovers that the boy is Amasawa Seiji, the mysterious person whom Shizuku noticed had checked out every single book in the library. The two later become friends and come to develop feelings for each other. However, when Seiji decides to go abroad to study for a career as a luthier, Shizuku begins to grow worried about her own future. As a result, Shizuku begins working on a book based on a cat at the local antique shop as the first step in beginning her own career.

Blu-ray Edition includes multiple audio language tracks and multiple sets of subtitles. It also features storyboards (shown as a picture-in-picture feature during the film), the dubbing script, the making of the background paintings in Baron sequences, and a documentary on the working process of animator Inoue Naohisa..
