Even though it is named Eat Drink Man Woman II in Chinese, Joyful Reunion is only conceptually and thematically related to Ang Lee s 1994 classic. Produced by Eat Man Drink Woman producer Hsu Li Kong (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), Joyful Reunion once again shows off the best of Chinese cuisine and explores how food can shape human relationships both familial and romantic ones. However, director Tsao Jui Yuan also explores the idea of reunification between Taiwan and China, namely through the eyes of those separated by decades of civil war and political tension. In this spirit, Joyful Reunion brings together film talents from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, including veteran actor Kenneth Tsang (Overheard 2), Huo Si Yan (Sleepwalker), Blue Lan (Night Market Hero), Joseph Chang (Prince of Tears), and Eat Drink Man Woman actress Rose Kuei.
Tang Shizhe (Kenneth Tsang) is the owner of a famous vegetarian restaurant in Hangzhou. His older daughter Wu-er (Huo Si Yan) is a career-driven health resort manager who is dating Chang Chuan (Blue Lan), a game designer from Taiwan, while his younger daughter Xiaolan is still a teenager living at home. One day, Tang announces to his daughter that he plans to sell his restaurant, though he doesn t reveal the reason why. Meanwhile, Chuan s aunt Pai Ping (Rose Kuei) who grew up in China before moving to Taiwan as a teenager – arrives in Hangzhou for a visit, and her disastrous first meeting with Wu-er puts Chuan and Wu-er s relationship in crisis..
