The once-popular Chinese vampire movies have become few and far between after the 1990s. The latest entry in this horror sub-genre, Moonlight attempts to surpass the classic Hong Kong vampire flicks with an updated formula, mixing martial arts and supernatural elements with romance and detective. Starring Johnny Chen (TV drama All Men are Brothers) and Daisy Yang (The Closet), the period thriller from director Wong Pak Kei (Trick or Cheat) is set in early 20th century China. A series of inexplicable deaths has taken place in a small town, and rumors are rampant that the killer is a vampire. The new mayor Fu Tianjing investigates the puzzling case with the help of his sister Fu Ziyun, who is a forensic doctor and doesn’t believe in claims of vampires. But Tianjing is framed and imprisoned when he stumbles upon shady links between the local security captain and tomb raiders from Japan. In order to save her brother and unravel the mystery, Ziyun is forced to team up with young Taoist exorcist Bu Yifeng….
