Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale Under the Willow Tree, director Fu Huayang’s turns Chinese author Fang Fang’s popular novel into his debut film Peach Blossoming (a.k.a. Taohua Canlan). Acclaimed locally and abroad, the film was chosen for competitions in China as well as an official selection for the “Hans Christian Andersen Series at the NatFilm, the biggest international film event in Denmark. According to the organizer, the film was selected for the witty way through which Andersen’s willow tree “bend its boughs all the way to culturally radical China”.

The film is set in Wuhan in the late 1970s, during the Cultural Revolution. Lu Xi (Guo Xiaodong) falls into love with Xing Zi (Zhou Yun) when they work as loaders in a railway station. The fundamental differences in their family backgrounds and social status forbid Lu Xi from revealing his feelings for her. When he finally has the courage to do so, she cannot forgive his past wrongdoings… Simple, touching but tragic, Peach Blossoms evoke Andersen’s story of the unattainable love in Under the Willow Tree, re-framing an old fairy tale in the contemporary contexts..
