Set in early Ming-dynasty China, TVB’s historical drama Relic of an Emissary is based on the “Jingnan Rebellion” where the imperial court was beset by the power struggle between a young emperor and his ambitious uncle. The drama’s original Chinese title (“Hongwu 32”) refers to the year (1399) the incident took place, and the script boldly combines known historical facts with fictional plots dramatizing the events leading up to the military coup. Featuring compelling political drama and exciting action scenes, the 2011 production from ace producer Wong Wai Sing stars Joe Ma and several popular alumni from Wong’s The Academy trilogy, including Michael Tse, Sammul Chan, Kate Tsui, Elanne Kong, and Joel Chan.
After the death of Ming’s first emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, the imperial mandate dictating his successor is stolen. The intended heir to the throne, Zhu Yunwen (Joel Chan) sends his bodyguard Ao Xiaofeng (Michael Tse) to find the lost will, during which Xiaofeng meets his match in eunuch Ma Sanbao (Sammul Chan), who is the trusted adviser to Yunwen’s uncle, the Prince of Yan (Joe Ma). Formerly a leader of the feared, ruthless Brocade-Clad Guards, Xiaofeng was rendered amnesiac in an accident, which has made him more sympathetic. In his quest to recover his memory, Xiaofeng becomes romantically entangled with Princess Yongyang (Elanne Kong) and the mysterious brothel madam Shen Qiansan (Kate Tsui), but there is no time for love when the ultimate revelation of his secret identity catapults him into a deadly web of palace intrigues….
