Former AKB48 idol Maeda Atsuko lives a life in arrested development in Tamako in Moratorium, the deadpan comedy from director Yamashita Nobuhiro (The Drudgery Train). Jobless since graduating from university, Tamako (Maeda Atsuko) spends her days at home reading comic books, playing video games, eating and tending to her father’s sporting good store every so often. Even after months of inaction, her father (Kan Soo Eun) can’t get himself to force Tamako to get a job. Finally, the young slacker finds a goal in life when her father is introduced to a local accessories maker. A lighthearted look at the apathy of modern Japanese youth and their disconnect from the rest of the world, Tamako in Moratorium was named one of the best ten Japanese films of 2013 by Kinema Junpo, Japan’s top film magazine.
