Originally released in 1963, Park Sang Ho’s seventh film Ttosuni: The Birth of Happiness has been digitally restored by the Korean Film Archive for DVD. Based on a popular radio drama, the classic melodrama stars Do Kum Bong as the eponymous heroine Tto Sun, a young hard-working woman with a good head on her shoulders. She falls in love with driver Jae Gu (Lee Dae Yub), but her father disapproves of the match. Tto Sun sets out to live independently on her own terms, working many different jobs to save up money to buy a car and start up a business with Jae Gu. Ttosuni provides a realistic portrait of the working class experience and the changing roles of women in the early sixties.
